Lucky Lacey – our first client
Please meet Lacey – she’s a very special girl. She came into our care today after being abandoned by her owners just a few weeks after giving birth. As they were attempting to tie her to some railings, luckily they were seen by a distant acquaintance who asked them what they were doing. Their reply? “We don’t want her any more but it’s ok, the dog warden will pick her up”. Yes, and then they might have to put her to sleep after seven days if no-one wanted her, but they could obviously care less about that bit! Even more amazingly, they loved her so much they kept one of her puppies, presumably having made enough blood money from the rest.
Have you ever seen anything like this? Personally, words fail me, ones I can put in print anyway. You might think that Lacey would be somewhat embittered towards humans by her experience, but although she’s understandably sad, wondering where on earth she is and why her puppies are no longer around to drink some of the milk she so clearly is just FULL of, she actually couldn’t be a more gorgeous, loving, friendly little girl.
She must be just exhausted, having been collected by Auntie Nat she had a decent drive down to meet Auntie Jane, who she is now in residence with, as I was too worried to leave her at our kennels on her first night. Once she’d had some food and a mooch around the garden, she literally has slept all day since – even stealing my pillow in the process, the cheeky madam
I have some great pictures and videos which really show what a little character she is, but I’ve had a couple of seriously late nights so I am not sure which one of us is more tired right now! Will post a full update of our first two days together tomorrow, hopefully saying how Lacey had a brilliant first night and that her vet check-up all went swimmingly, fingers crossed.
Just need also to say a massive thank you to the brilliant generous people who have donated money, equipment and food to us today – and lucky Lacey may have already found her perfect foster family too! I am going to meet them tomorrow, so with any luck she won’t need to go into kennels at all.
All of us at My Forever Home are so happy to have had the chance to help Lacey, we couldn’t have wished for a more perfect little girl for our first rescue doggie. If you think you can provide the perfect life this adorable little girl so deserves – only once we are satisfied she is completely ready, which will include her bosoms reducing to more normal proportions once her body realises her milk is no longer needed – then please do get in touch – you may have some stiff competition to beat but don’t let that stop you trying!
Monday 4th July 2011 update
Just a quick photo to add tonight as I’m pooped, I thought this was so funny – this dog can literally sleep anywhere, she even defies gravity
Tuesday 5th July 2011 – just a little update tonight
Well lucky Lacey has well and truly landed on her paws! Yesterday we went to see MFH’s very first fantastic fosterers, Trisha and Ken, and their two insanely cute dogs, Bruno and Gypsy (pics to follow). I am so so happy to report that they all got on like a house on fire, if a little reservedly with the canine contingent, and her first night passed without too much incident – and even better no ‘accidents’ she’s such a clever girl!
She is apparently in love with Ken, draping herself around his neck on the back of the chair as if she was a cat (pics of that to follow too!) and has now started to come out of her shell and play with Bruno (Gypsy is above all that, being a beautiful laydeeeee lurcher), which I am so pleased about. She loves humans soooo much and now it seems she does really like her own kind too, she just doesn’t give it all away at the first meeting
Evil boyfriend Rich has now said he is going to lock me out of the router if I don’t get offline in 2 minutes (well I did only have 10 hours sleep in total from Friday night to yesterday, and actually thought I was having a heart attack last night – not joking I was scared witless!!)… so I will sign off for now.
Just have to say thank you with all my heart to Trisha and Ken, for giving this gorgeous girl a loving home whilst the search for her forever home continues – you are truly lovely people, huge hugs to you both xx
Wednesday 6th July 2011 – brilliant fosterer update and pics – thanks so much Trisha!
She is fine and had a good night last night, and a good day today (apart from one little blip – more later).
She has now had 2 doses of her medicine, and also her worming tabs and she is fine. There is a marked reduction in the size of her teats as you can see from the photos – the 2 back ones are still large but not as large and the others are reducing nicely. They also don’t seem to be bothering her at all! [Brilliant news ]
She had a bath today. As I had to go out unexpectedly this morning and Ken couldn’t bathe her on his own, he took her to our local grooming parlour who did a marvellous job on her. Plus, when they heard her story they only charged Ken £10 instead of their normal £18 which I thought was very good of them.
By the way, this is not a request for reimbursement, it was our decision to take her and we are happy to stand the cost. [Awww thanks again Trisha but I would have happily sorted her out, you don't need to go 'splashing out' on the little madam, especially when she... you know what, don't want to spoil the surprise ]!! She will have the flea treatment this evening.
She is still absolutely gorgeous – even nicer now as she smells so much better. The downside is that now she is clean she is shedding a lot of hair – still I am used to that.
We have put up a barn door style gate outside our front door to make sure that we can open the door with confidence. This will have benefits in the future with our two and the delivery/postmen plus any future foster dogs we might have – yes, I would do it again after Lacey. [Woohoo!!!!!]
The 3 dogs are getting along very happily, as I write they are all on different chairs, fast asleep & very comfortable thank you very much.
Lacey is a THIEF. I can’t believe how far she can reach for such a small doggy. When I got back at lunchtime I put the remainder of a hotpot I had in the fridge into a bowl and covered it with clingfilm ready to microwave it warm for my lunch. I put the bowl in the centre of the butchers block in the kitchen and turned to the sink to put cold water into the used baking dish to soak it. When I turned back it was to see that she had stood on her hind legs, dragged the bowl out of the centre towards her, moved the clingfilm and was busy licking up gravy and meat and anything else she could reach! All in the space of about 20-30 seconds!!! [I absolutely laughed my head off at this story, sorry Trisha!!]
She got soundly told off for it and the end result was that after an afternoon nap she woke and then was extremely sick and most of it was stolen food!
She is beginning to know the command down – i.e. get down from the block or work surface. She also knows NO i.e. no you can’t climb into the fridge, so she is bright enough to work out what we don’t want her to do. [Including do not eat my lunch?
]
If we want to bring in shopping we have been putting a lead on her so that we can open the front without losing her but after the first time she now lies down and turns her head so it is very difficult to attach the lead to the collar – it doesn’t take her long to work things out. [Hmmm, bit too clever for her own good this one!]
What a fab update! And such great pics, proving yet again this dog cares not where she sleeps. So we now know a little more about what a great character Lacey is turning into, has she got her feet under the table or what?
More to come in the Lacey saga tomorrow, for now thanks for reading (and the eggs, they went down very nicely indeed thank you so much again – oh and what is Lacey making of the hens by the way?), and night night!
Fast forward to Friday 5th August 2011 – where has the last month gone?!! Great news though – Lacey has her paws happily under her new mum’s table woohoo!!
As we didn’t have anywhere for Lacey to go when things got a little too hectic for poor Trisha and Ken, and a rescue we worked with had a lovely potential home lined up, we decided it was much better for Lacey to go on a little road trip then go back into kennels! So off she went, and her new mum fell in love straight away – how could she not? They spend all of their time together, which is exactly what each animal deserves in an ideal world, and I can’t wait to go visit them later this month – pics to follow!

OMG! how can people be so cruel as you say she had obviousley served her purpose and the sad thing is one of her own babies will probably now take over as their breeding machine. So sad but at least she has a chance of a happy future thanks to you and the people who found her.
Lovely Lucky Lacey – you don’t know it yet but you have well and truly landed on all four paws being taken in by MFH.
Good luck for the future lovely girl but I am certain you will not need it. Only the best for you from now xx
Just shows that all these dogs need is a caring home with a good routine and some boundaries and they will blossom.
Onwards and upwards Lacey and thank you MFH for giving her the chance she needed
